Reclaiming Your Energy

black woman thought

Do you seem to feel tired and fatigued all the time? You may feel like you have nothing left to give. Could it be that you feel this way because you’ve given all of your energy away?

You may be giving a lot of your energy to your job, your family, your friends, your community or your obligations (or all of these at the same time). Of course, there are things we need and want to give our energy to but if we don’t do so in a healthy and balanced way, it leaves us depleted.

Becoming depleted doesn’t necessarily happen overnight. Sometimes, it starts with us giving away our energy with small tasks here and there. However, even if we are only giving away little pieces of ourselves at a time, it will eventually leave us with nothing if we are not replenished.

Imagine yourself as a glass of water pouring into a variety of other cups- giving a little water to each cup around you. If you do not get filled or replenished eventually you will end up being just an empty glass. This water represents your energy and when you are out of energy it can be a dooming feeling.

How to Reclaim Your Energy

“Just Say No” Sometimes, you are going to have to say “no” even when you are used to saying “yes.” This may take practice in order for it to feel normal. Some of us are so used to saying “yes” when we are asked to do something that we automatically feel guilty for saying “no.” Remember, that saying “no” is your choice and it may be a choice that will lead you to a healthier, happier life.

Know your worth Sometimes, we feel obligated to give away our energy without expecting anything in return because we don’t value our own worth. We may consciously or unconsciously feel that other people’s needs and wants matter more than our own. Once you realize that you deserve the same love and energy that you give to others, things will begin to shift in your life.

Balance. Balance. Balance. They say life is “give and take.” If all you do is give and you never receive, you are setting yourself up for burnout and feeling drained. You do not have to live in extremes of either “helping everybody” or “helping no one.” You can still help others while helping yourself. You can love others while loving yourself. You can serve others while still serving yourself. Find a balance that is healthy. Often times, we can tell if we are balanced by how we feel. If you are feeling drained, frustrated, depleted, disappointed, etc. this is often a sign that you don’t have enough balance in your life.

Fill Your Cup. Instead of giving until you’re empty, keep yourself full. Lisa Nichols often says “serve from your saucer not your cup…serve from the overflow.” When you are getting your cup filled– by doing the things you love, spending time around people who make you feel fulfilled, getting the nutrients you need and taking time to recharge – it makes it much easier to give to others (within the limits that you define). When you give from your overflow, you can give while staying full and happy.

Challenge Self-Limiting Beliefs. You may feel the need to give without receiving because of old or limiting beliefs. Take time to question any belief that causes you to do or think things that make you unhappy. Some of these beliefs may stem from generational or ancestral traumas (i.e enslavement).  Bring in beliefs and thoughts that make you feel free and happy.

If this resonates with you, take some time to write down a few small steps you can take in order to reclaim your energy and get balance in your life.
